Quote: Canadian Imperialism

In fact, it is arguable that, far from being in contradiction, the domination of Canada by foreign interests and Canada's own activities abroad are the two sides of the same coin. For as Draimin and Swift suggest, imperialism is a complex system and Canada's position in it is itself complex. To the extent that Canada is an imperial power, it is so only within this wider imperial system, in which certain activities are allocated to it. And to the extent that it is a colony it is a privileged one, which gets to share in the fruits of its colonizers' adventures in less fortunate countries.
