Borders, Citizenship, Trafficking

I just listened to a great interview with academic and activist Nandita Sharma in the January 2008 episode of No One Is Illegal Radio. I have reviewed Sharma's book Home Economics: Nationalisms and the Making of 'Migrant Workers' in Canada on this site and have also been working with it, among other things, for a piece of writing that has been occupying much of my offline productive time this month (and that I sent off just today to two lovely and trusted comrades for feedback).

The first segment of the interview is a fascinating critical look at the issue of human trafficking, especially the ways in which the mainstream anti-trafficking movement completely mischaracterizes the phenomenon and ends up functioning as the moral regulatory arm of state control over migrants. The second segment focuses more on Home Economics, and covers topics like the problems with left nationalist discourses, citizenship, the state, and building a no-borders movement.

Interesting stuff. Check it out!
